Understanding Emotions

Emotions are energy. They are natural responses to life experiences, meant to give us feedback and move through our bodies quickly as “energy in motion.”

Feelings are personal interpretations of emotional energy.

It’s important to make this distinction because feelings and emotions don’t always go hand in hand. Many of us have emotions that we don’t allow ourselves to feel. The body experiences these emotions, but the conscious mind pushes them out of awareness.

Oftentimes this happens because we learned somewhere along the way that it wasn’t safe or acceptable to express our emotions. We may have also learned to see emotions as too uncomfortable or inconvenient to be worthy of our attention.

In any event, unprocessed emotions don’t just disappear. Their energy remains trapped in the body, often manifesting as tension, irritability, anxiety, inflammation, or other imbalances.

These imbalances influence how we feel, think, and respond to life. They also influence how life responds to us, since our energy travels with us and directly impacts others. We may be hiding emotions from ourselves in some cases, but we are not hiding them from others.

For example, have you ever found yourself feeling uneasy around someone, even if they seemed to be genuinely kind? Have you ever known that something was wrong with a loved one, even when they insisted they were fine and did their best to demonstrate that? Have you ever been in a great mood, only to find yourself inexplicably feeling “off” after spending time with a person who was deeply anxious? Perhaps you have been on the other end of these experiences as well. In any case, these are all common examples of how our systems perceive emotional energy independently of the logical mind.

If any of these examples resonated, you’re not imagining things. The body is constantly communicating through subtle energetic signals, even when the conscious mind hasn’t caught up yet. Becoming aware of this dynamic is often the first step toward meaningful change. Taking action to release what the body has been holding is the second one.
